1. Wine Labelling Context
The European Commission published Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 amending labelling rules for wine and aromatised wine products by, among other things, making mandatory to communicate the list of ingredients (including additives, and excluding processing aids), used during the vinification process and also the nutritional values for these products.
This information could be written directly on the label or through a QR code (digital format) placed on the label. These new rules will apply to all alcoholic beverages present on the European market and obtained from the harvest 2024 while all wines produced before December 8th 2023 will still be exempted from the new rules until stocks are exhausted.
Allergenic substances will continue to be presented on the physical label as it will be the case now for the energy value.
2. Ingredients: what does it mean?
3 different categories of products are distinguished: Ingredients, additives and processing aids.
Only oenological products classified as additives trigger labelling obligation.
3. What does it mean for Lallemand Oenology product use?
Almost all of our products are classified as processing aids, and do not trigger labelling obligation.
This concerns our full ranges of:
- all selected wine yeasts
- all wine yeast protectors
- all wine yeast nutrients
- all selected wine bacteria
- all wine bacteria nutrients
- all wine enzymes
- all chitosan-based formulations
- among our specific yeast derivatives (SYD) range, all specific inactivated yeasts or autolysates used during the vinification process like, OPTI-REDTM, OPTI-MUM-REDTM, BOOSTER ROUGETM, OPTI-WHITETM, OPTI-MUM-WHITETM, GLUTASTARTM, BOOSTER BLANCTM, PUNCHYTM, NOBLESSETM, OPTI-LEESTM, REDULESSTM, PURE-LEES LONGEVITYTM, PURE-LEES ELEGANCYTM and PURE-LEES DELICACYTM,
- cell wall: RESKUETM
- yeast protein extract: FINELYTM
It means that all our products in the above product ranges and all the products listed above DON’T NEED TO BE LABELLED on wine packaging.
⇒ Exception for 4 products that are considered as additives
MANNOLEESTM, MANNOLEES BLANCTM, MANNOLEES FLASHTM, and MANNOSTYLETM containing yeast mannoproteins and arabic gum are classified as additives. To comply with Regulation (EU) 2021/2117, these additives must be labelled in the list of ingredients of wine and aromatized wine products, designated by their function (stabilizer) followed by their specific name (yeast mannoproteins and gum arabic).
